On your first consultation the physiotherapist will need to assess your general state of health and give you the most effective treatment. You will be asked about your current symptoms, medical history, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state.
Physiotherapists who are trained in acupuncture use hair-fine needles, much finer than those used for injections, consequently the discomfort is slight. When the needle is inserted it is often not felt at all or only as a slight pricking sensation. After a few seconds there is usually a dull ache or a numb feeling, many people find this relaxing rather than unpleasant. On average 10-12 needles are used and left in place for 20-30 minutes. The physiotherapist may supplement the needle treatment with moxa, a smouldering herb which is used to warm acupuncture points, or with electro-acupuncture. Massage or taping may also be used on acupuncture points.
Our practitioners at Joints & Points are fully qualified Chartered Physiotherapist who have undergone further training to enable them to practice acupuncture.
